5 Must Know Tips For Washing Pillows

There is definitely a difference between sleeping on a regular pillow and a great one. You will notice that when you use a regular pillow to sleep, you might suffer from a painful neck when you wake up. If the quality of your pillow is great, you will be left with good memories, and you’ll feel comfortable the whole night. To keep your pillows clean and spotless, follow these tips.

5 Must Know Tips For Washing Pillows

  1. Basic steps for washing pillows

If you have a polyester pillow, then these tips will be perfect for you.

First of all, make sure to read the tag on the pillow and check how it should be washed. In case you’re using a top loading or front loading machine, it’s advisable to wash two pillows at the same time so that the machine will be balanced. If your pillows have become yellow over time, use 1 cup bleach solution to soak your pillows in before washing. Soak them for about 30 minutes to one hour.

When choosing a detergent, make sure it’s a mild one. You can combine it with white vinegar and hot water to kill the bacteria and other contaminants in your pillow. If the pillow is already smelly, add 2 to 3 tablespoons of baking soda to your solution to get rid of the odour. When you are done cleaning, it’s important to get your pillow completely dry. The drying process can take 2 to 3 cycles to ensure that all of the bacteria are killed. Check for moisture from time to time and do this until the pillow is completely dry.

  1. Two to three times a year of washing

Wash it regularly two to three times a year. Clean your pillow sooner though if you notice that your pillow has become greasy and has a spot at the area you usually lay your head on.

  1. Pillow protectors

Put pillow protectors inside the pillow case to help keep pillows clean longer. They will help keep allergens from your pillow, as well as serve as protection against the oil and grease from your face at the end of the day. Be sure to wash the protectors, too.

  1. When your pillows need to be replaced

Pillows filled with polyester usually last only up to two years, but a lot of people keep their pillow longer. If your pillow’s ability to support your neck when sleeping isn’t as good as before, then it’s time to replace it.

  1. How to wash feather pillows

The process for washing feather pillows is not very different from how you wash a polyester pillow. One of the things you should take note of though is that a feather pillow should not be bleached.  You can leave them under the sun to dry them naturally, and it will make them white again.

With these tips, your pillows will soon be clean, fluffy and good as new. And since you’re cleaning your pillows, why not give your mattress a deep clean, too?
